Preparing well for movement

A few simple habits can help exercise feel more comfortable and enjoyable.

Whether you are walking, lifting or trying a new class, a little preparation helps. Start with a gentle warm up of five to ten minutes, gradually raising your heart rate and moving the joints you are about to use.

Think about timing. Many people feel better having a light snack or meal a little while before activity, and drinking water through the day rather than all at once. Notice what feels right for your body.

Choose a level that lets you finish feeling you could have done slightly more. Progress steadily over weeks, and allow time for rest and recovery.

If you have a health condition, are returning after injury or feel unsure, speak with your GP or a qualified professional before starting something new.
